Many of the men and women who have served in our armed forces have difficulty finding fulfilling careers once they’ve been discharged from active duty. These veterans represent a broad cross-section of America and constitute a labor force that is well-trained, highly skilled, and in many ways, untapped.
Whether as a grip or a truck driver, prop master, cameraman, writer or director; there are careers awaiting veterans that take advantage of their military training. SetVets is dedicated to providing access to these career paths. The first step is an introduction to the film production community. The most common entry level position is production assistant (PA). The SetVets Orientation, a three day workshop, focuses on PA training, however, the various crew positions and union requirements are explained to all candidates. We make it very clear that is but the first step.
The SetVets program’s objective is to add 25-30 vets annually to the SetVets roster. In order to accomplish this, we plan to recruit 12-36 veterans each year to participate in the SetVets program. The heart of the program is the SetVets Orientation, a 3-day workshop. The 3 days introduces participants to the rigors of working on an actual set and also gives the instructors the opportunity to observe the participants’ strengths, weaknesses, and attitude. The plan is to produce 1-3 Orientations annually. An Orientation costs $9,000-10,000 to produce: typically 40% in kind donations and 60% cash. This is based on the continued generosity of the film community. Currently, there are 10 candidates vetted for the next Orientation.
Working successfully as a PA creates the opportunity to acquire the reputation and relationships necessary to move into specific departments and more senior positions. We intend to track the SetVets and be available for support, feedback, and coaching as they progress along their chosen career paths.
Dave Dean, the founder of SetVets, has worked on over 1000 projects in his 29 years in the film industry. Starting out as a Production Assistant, he worked his way through many occupations until settling in as a First Assistant Director in 1992. He’s steered projects in over 20 countries working alongside many award winning directors, including Spike Jonze, Julien Temple, and Alejandro Inarritu.
Dave conceived the idea for the SetVets program several years ago while working on an ad campaign for the US Army. He was inspired by the expertise and efficiency of the military staff that was part of the production. He realized that the production environment is a natural fit for veterans. Vets accept direction well while taking initiative and remaining motivated. They are accustomed to working in unfamiliar, demanding environments, and forming the interpersonal bonds necessary to thrive in circumstances that require both physical and emotional stamina. These are all qualities highly valued in production.
In 2015, Dave partnered with Roni Kebir who provided extensive experience in nonprofit project development and management. The plan is to fund the SetVets program with donations and grants from private foundations and public agencies.
